New regulations in line with CRRU (Campaign for Resposible Rodenticide Use) are now in place. These set of new regulations limit the availability of anticogulant rodenticides to non-certified / amateur users.
In practice this will mean that the concentration and the amount of anticoagulant rodenticides available will be reduced. Concentrations of anticoagulant actives (i.e. difenacoum, bromadiolone and brodifacoum) for amateur have to be reduced from 50 ppm to 25 ppm by law (anyone selling full-strenghth professional anticoagulant rodenticides to non-certified individuals are breaking the law). Also pack sizes from diy stores for amateur use are now reduced from 1.5 kg to 300g for block bait and 150 g for wheat baits, pasta and pelleted baits.
It is envisaged that the reduction in concentration and the availability of smaller pack sizes might be adequate for smaller insfestations in domestic propeties. However, problems will most certainly be encountered if domestic householders (or farmers) try to tackle more substantial rodent problems. This can occur the form of under-baiting and can result in the likelyhood of an increase of anticoagulant resistance. Field trials suggest that the key to rodent control with the 25ppm (low concentration) baits is to use a palatable, quality formulation, to place enough bait points and to replensih these on a frequent basis.
However, to get rodent infestations under control fast, we recommend to get a certified pest control professional (such as Aardvark Pest Control). Pest Control professionals will be using the correct type of full strenghth (50ppm) anticoagulant baits in conjunction with trapping and proofing solutions.
